What is CBT?
Computer-Based Testing (CBT) replaces paper-and-pen examinations with digital tests taken on computers, tablets, or smartphones. Students answer questions on screen, and the system grades their responses automatically. It's been used by JAMB for years, and now individual schools can adopt the same approach.
Why Schools Are Adopting CBT
The benefits are compelling:
- Instant grading — Results are available the moment the student submits. No waiting for teachers to mark papers.
- Question banks — Build a reusable pool of questions organized by subject and topic. Create new exams in minutes by selecting from your bank.
- Reduced cheating — Questions can be randomized so no two students see the same sequence.
- Detailed analytics — See which questions students struggled with, identify knowledge gaps, and improve teaching.
- Cost savings — No printing, no paper, no manual marking.
Setting Up CBT in EdSkool
EdSkool's CBT engine is built right into the platform. Here's the workflow:
- Build your question bank — Add questions with multiple choice options, correct answers, and optional explanations.
- Create an exam — Select questions from the bank, set a time limit, and assign it to specific classes.
- Publish the exam — Students see it in their portal and can begin when the exam window opens.
- Review results — After submission, view individual scores, class averages, and question-level analytics.
Entrance Examinations
One of the most popular uses of our CBT engine is for admission entrance exams. Applicants receive a unique access code and take the exam from the public admissions portal — no school account needed. Results flow directly into the admissions pipeline.
Getting Started
If your school has a computer lab (even just 10-15 machines), you can start running CBT exams today. Students can also use personal devices. The system is fully web-based — no software installation required.
